What is tax back?

Working holiday makers and other non-residents are charged quite a lot of tax when they enter Australia and begin to work, usually 29%. The good news is that, if eligible, you will be entitled to claim some or all of that tax paid back. Exactly how much taxback you will recieve is dependant on the length of time you spend in the country, your gross earnings and the rate of tax you have been paying. Therefore your tax refund amount is assessed on an individual basis by the Australian Tax Office, and will differ from person to person.

Provided you are eligible, you will be entitled to claim taxback at two different times of the year. The financial year in Australia runs from July 1st through June 30th. Therefore at the end of each financial year (from July 1st) you may apply for your taxback for the previous financial year. This taxback is returned by the tax office within 7-10 working days. Also, if you leave the country before the end of the financial year, you can apply early for that current year's taxback. These early returns take longer for the tax office to process and return, normally 4-6 weeks.

Please refer to our taxback tips for some tips on maximising your taxback or our Frequently Asked Questions for further information. And should you have any queries, please do not hesitate to e-mail or call the office.
